Blood clotting
Blood clotting :
The process of blood coagulation or blood coagulation is known
It is one of the complex processes carried out by the body as a natural reaction to stop the bleeding that occurs as a result of a blood vessel being injured or damaged. This is done by forming a blood clot to block the damaged area and prevent blood from escaping through it. The clotting process requires the presence of two basic elements to complete the process:
- Platelets (in English: Platelets),
- And special proteins known as clotting factors (in English: Coagulation factors), In fact, the body dissolves the clot formed naturally after the damaged area heals. However, in some cases, the clot formed may not be dissolved by the body. Or a blood clot develops inside the blood vessels without any apparent injury or damage inside these vessels, which may pose a threat to the person’s life. It requires medical intervention for treatment.
Blood clotting mechanism:
First, the platelets move to the area of damage to the endothelial lining of the blood vessels
The platelets clump together and form a dam that prevents blood from escaping through the wound. This stage is called primary hemostasis. During this stage, the secondary hemostasis stage begins, which includes the occurrence of a group of complex chemical reactions through proteins known as clotting factors, most of which are produced by the liver. The last stage of these chemical reactions is the conversion of a protein
Fibrinogen is transformed into fibrin or fibrin, which is a water-insoluble protein that forms a strong network over the platelets collected in the wound area to support it. To produce the solid layer known as a blood clot, Which prevents bleeding until the damaged area heals
Blood clotting risk factors:
There are many factors that stimulate the formation of a blood clot in different ways, The factors that increase the risk of a blood clot forming in an artery differ from the factors that increase the risk of it forming in a vein. A person’s genes may also play a role in the blood clotting process and the speed of blood clot formation.
The most important of these factors:
- Progress in age.
- Obesity.
- Lack of movement, Including prolonged immobility, Or travel long distances.
- Pregnancy.
- Smoking.
- High cholesterol in the blood.
- Taking oral contraceptives.
- Suffering from certain types of cancer.
- Hypertension.
- diabetes. Chronic inflammatory diseases.
- Some types of surgical operations.
- Exposure to physical trauma.
- Taking specific types of medications.
